The 2011 Oakley Pro Am Golf Tournament Series began in March, bringing together Oakley athletes, retail partners and club pros to help drive awareness of Oakley’s golf line. Participants compete for a spot in the Skull Cup, which lands on the same weekend as the Phoenix Cup, and the winner enjoys an Oakley experience at both.
Infinite Hero partnered with Oakley, at the latest Pro Am stop – Red Sky Golf Club in Wolcott, CO, nestled outside of Vail. The foundation had a presence on the 17th hole, which boasted commanding vistas of the expansive valley and Rocky Mountain range. Situated on a par three, notorious for getting backed-up, the Infinite Hero team had ample time to share its mission with the players.
MSgt David Lind, U.S.M.C. Ret., joined the Infinite Hero representatives at Red Sky to tell his story. Davey, as he prefers to be called, is a retired career Marine who served in the Philippines, Japan, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Afghanistan and Iraq. While on his third deployment in Iraq, Davey’s vehicle struck a Pressure Plate IED (Improvised Explosive Device). The blast from the device amputated his legs from the knee down. Surpassing expectations by eight months, Davey took his first steps with the help of prosthetics just two months after the incident.
Post-tournament, the golfers enthusiastically supported our service members with an impromptu live auction for Infinite Hero. They donated foursomes they had received in the tournament raffle, and Oakley Golf Rep, Matt Thomas, donated an Oakley Pro Am Series surfboard, which quickly brought in $1000. Those who monetarily donated $50 or more received a golf towel, and challenge coins for those who donated $100 or more.
By the end of the tournament, the extremely generous Pro Am participants and sponsors had collectively contributed nearly $7,000 to the Infinite Hero Foundation. The crowd erupted at the outcome and gave Infinite Hero and Davey a standing ovation.
Infinite Hero would like to thank MSgt David Lind, U.S.M.C. Ret., Oakley, Inc. and all the Pro Am Series players for their support and generous contributions.
