For three decades Dr. Jim Loehr has researched and developed a science-based model for the Holistic Energy System. Dr. Loehr will apply his findings to veterans and the military, providing practical, performance-based guidance to strengthen physical, mental and emotional resilience. Thereafter, he will join panelists who know well the Power of Positive Thinking and how it can help transform hardship into a source of strength. Jim Loehr, Ed.D, Co-Founder, Johnson & Johnson’s Human Performance Institute; Vice President of Applied Science and Performance Psychology, Wellness & Prevention, Inc. Moderator: Tom Davin, Chairman & CEO, 5.11 Tactical |
18:00 | Conversation II: Dicing Data: Suicide Risk Detection and Prevention Suicide is a leading cause of death in the United States and the second most common cause of death in the United States military. According to a recent report, 22 veterans commit suicide everyday with more service members dying by suicide than by combat-related causes. How can suicidal patterns be identified? Dr. Craig Bryan and Chris Poulin share cutting edge research and results of the Durkheim project, a linguistic-driven suicide risk prediction model. By analyzing the text of clinical notes and real-time data from social media, big data promises a breakthrough for future suicide risk detection and prevention. Facilitators: |

10:50 | BRAIN Healing the Warrior Brain The brain is the coordination center of not only sensation, but also nervous and intellectual activity that drives our reality. Extreme emotional trauma, a severe physical blow to the head and actions in battle that contradict personal moral beliefs often result in disorders and injuries that haunt veterans long after they return from war zones. Experts in brain imaging outline the cause and effect of post-traumatic stress disorder, traumatic brain injury and moral injury, setting the stage for a discussion about the technologies and treatments being developed to evaluate and rehabilitate sufferers. 13:30 | Virtual Reality’s New Reality Three decades after we first heard virtual reality would change the world, it finally is imminent. Facebook’s $2 billion acquisition of Oculus VR, a tiny maker of virtual-reality headsets that haven’t yet hit the market, heralds the technology’s arrival as the Next Big Thing. Advocates see an entirely new platform for video calls, conferencing, 3D games and more, but some of the best applications may be for the military. The technology could alter care in mental health and physical rehabilitation, from easing phantom limb pain in amputees to soothing burn victims’ painful treatme nt to providing therapy for veterans with PTSD. Virtual reality gurus and experts in mental health take a gaze at what looms on the horizon. Marshall Millett, Founder, Aemass Moderator: Spencer Reiss, Contributing Editor, WIRED |
