About Project Sanctuary

Mission: Project Sanctuary is a leading provider of therapeutic retreats and ongoing support for military families by reconnecting and empowering the entire family toward healing.

Vision: Project Sanctuary believes that when one person serves, the entire family serves, and envisions a world where military families find healing, strength, and a lifeline to a more hopeful future together.

Programs for military-associated youth are few. Even rarer are programs addressing the mental health needs of military teenagers. Since 2007, Project Sanctuary established an innovative approach to family healing by providing educational workshops and recreational therapy to all members of at-risk military families over a six-day therapeutic retreat experience. Our retreats focus on connectedness, communication, conflict resolution, financial wellness, and mental health.

How We Helped

In 2016, Project Sanctuary lost program participant veteran Brian Walton to suicide. In honor of, and in response to, this tragic loss, Project Sanctuary vowed to honor Brian’s legacy by creating a dedicated peer mentorship program funded by an Infinite Hero grant of $100,000.

The Walton’s Warriors Peer Mentorship Program is the only training program nationwide providing at least 10 months of strategic training on self-care, red flags, and combat-related PTSD, with a built-in support network to help ensure peer-mentor retention and provide veterans with a new mission. In 2017, Infinite Hero provided an additional $60,000 to help build upon beta-year success by incorporating additional mentors and coaches and launching more innovative strategies.

In 2025, Infinite Hero is proud to be funding Project Sanctuary’s new Pursuing Wellness for Teens curriculum. This curriculum, developed by Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialists and guided by licensed professional counselors, focuses on the unique challenges these resilient teens face. The program will provide critical tools for mental health, stress management, emotional resilience, and life skills, building on the success of our “Life Outside the Nest” initiative. Thanks to IHF’s investment, the program will launch as a pilot during the 2025 retreat season, with plans for full implementation in 2026.
